The challenge

What Sportswear Printers
Actually Need from a Sublimation Machine

Choosing the wrong sublimation printer for sportswear production is a costly mistake. Print width, ink volume, throughput and fabric compatibility all vary significantly between models — and the difference between a machine that fits your workflow and one that bottlenecks it compounds on every job you run.

Print Width

Sportswear and teamwear panels come in a range of widths. A printer that cannot cover your widest cut wastes material through tiling or forces you to turn away work. Getting the width right from the start avoids an expensive upgrade twelve months in.

Colour Vibrancy

Sublimation on polyester demands saturated, accurate colour — particularly for brand kits where PANTONE matching matters. An entry-level machine or poorly profiled setup produces dull output that fails client colour approval on branded teamwear.

Throughput vs Quality

Production sportswear runs require sustained output without banding, ink starvation or head strikes. A machine that looks fast on the spec sheet but requires frequent maintenance interventions will not sustain a production schedule.

Ink Cost Per Metre

Sublimation ink costs accumulate fast on volume jobs. The cost-per-square-metre difference between models and ink systems is significant over a year of production — the right machine choice directly affects your margin on every order.

Questions sportswear printers ask us

Common Questions
Answered

These are the questions our team gets asked most often by sportswear manufacturers and textile printers considering a sublimation printer.

Dye sublimation transfers ink into the fabric at a molecular level through heat pressing, producing vibrant, wash-fast prints with no hand feel on the garment. Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing deposits ink onto the surface of the fabric and works on cotton. Sublimation requires polyester or high-polyester blends and is the professional standard for sportswear and activewear because the print is permanently bonded to the fabric and survives repeated washing without cracking or fading.
The right model depends on your print volume and transfer width. The SC-F1 series is a compact entry-level machine suited to small-scale teamwear and promotional work. The SC-F5 and F6 series are mid-volume workhorses covering most teamwear and sportswear businesses. The SC-F7 and F9 series are high-volume production machines for manufacturers running multiple shifts or wide-format textile jobs. We will match you to the right model based on your weekly square metre output and the widest cut you need to cover.
Dye sublimation works on polyester and polyester-blend fabrics. For sportswear and activewear, most performance fabrics are high-polyester content and work well. On blended fabrics with cotton content above roughly 30%, colour vibrancy and wash fastness drop noticeably. Sublimation also works on hard substrates coated with a polyester layer, including mugs, phone cases and aluminium panels — which makes the same machine useful for promotional product work alongside garment production.
Yes. A sublimation printer produces transfer paper — the heat press bonds the ink into the fabric. For flat garment panels and cut-and-sew production, a flat-bed heat press is standard. For finished garments, a rotary calendar press is more efficient for volume work. We can advise on the right heat press setup to pair with your chosen Epson model based on your product range and production volume.
Yes. We arrange operating leases and finance leases for Epson SureColor sublimation printers, typically over two to four years. For production environments, a managed print agreement covering hardware, ink and servicing on a fixed monthly cost is also available. This is particularly useful for businesses scaling up production capacity without a large capital outlay at the start.
