What Sign Makers Actually
Need from a Wide Format Printer

Most wide format printer advice treats sign shops like they all do the same work. They do not. A shop running vehicle wraps on cast vinyl has different requirements to one producing short-run POS display boards — and the wrong ink technology, or a machine with the wrong media range, will cost you jobs before you realise it.

Ink Technology

Latex, eco-solvent and UV-curable inks are not interchangeable. Each suits different substrates, drying times and outdoor durability requirements. The wrong call at the buying stage means either over-spending on capability you do not need or under-speccing for the jobs that matter most.

Media Versatility

Sign shops print on vinyl, canvas, mesh, fabric, board and film. A machine that handles only part of that range means turning away jobs or buying a second printer sooner than planned — neither is a good outcome.

Throughput vs Quality

Volume sign shops need speed, but not at the cost of accuracy. Banding on a large format banner or a colour shift mid-run on a vehicle graphic is a reprint at your expense, not theirs.

Finishing Integration

A printer that does not align with your laminator, cutter or flatbed creates manual handling between every stage. The right setup runs print, laminate and cut as a single flow.

These are the questions our team gets asked most often by sign makers and display graphics businesses considering a new wide format printer.

For most UK sign shops today, HP Latex is the stronger choice. No extraction required, prints are dry and ready to laminate straight off the machine, and the media range — especially on the R-series — covers vinyl, textiles, wallpaper and some rigid substrates without a separate flatbed. Eco-solvent still makes sense if your output is almost entirely vinyl and banner media and you already have extraction in place, and the hardware entry cost is lower. The honest answer is it depends on your specific situation — premises, output mix, volume. Call us and we will tell you plainly which one makes more sense for your shop.

54-inch (1372mm) covers most banner, poster and vehicle graphic work. 64-inch (1626mm) gives you more room on wide vehicle liveries, building wraps and large wall graphics without tiling. Going wider than 64 inches only makes commercial sense at high volume or for specialist architectural work. If you are on the border between the two, think about the jobs you have had to tile or turn away in the last six months — that usually decides it.

The HP Latex R-series handles both roll and rigid media up to 25mm thick — foam board, Dibond, acrylic, corrugated plastic — so if you do significant rigid work it removes the need for a separate flatbed UV machine entirely. If your rigid volume is lower, a standard roll-fed latex printer with a laminator is usually more cost-effective. Worth having that conversation before buying either way.

A wide format printer and a cutting plotter are separate pieces of equipment. Some HP Latex models include an integrated cutter for straight trimming, but contour cutting of complex shapes needs a dedicated cutting plotter. Consistent colour across vinyl, canvas, fabric and board is one of the harder problems in sign production — particularly when a client needs matched colours across different substrate types on the same job. Standard RIP software handles this adequately for straightforward work. For shops where colour accuracy across media is a regular requirement, PrintFactory handles media profiling, PANTONE matching and multi-substrate consistency at a level standard RIP software does not reach.
