The challenge

What Vehicle Wrap Shops
Actually Need from a Wide Format Printer

Vehicle wrapping demands more from a wide format printer than most sign work. Colour accuracy on curved surfaces, ink adhesion on cast and calendered vinyls, throughput under turnaround pressure and the ability to handle large uninterrupted panel runs all matter more in a wrap shop than they do in a general print environment.

Colour Consistency

A full vehicle wrap printed across multiple panels must match precisely. Colour drift between print runs, or between rolls of vinyl, creates visible joins on the finished vehicle that cannot be fixed without reprinting entire panels.

Vinyl Compatibility

Cast and calendered wrap vinyls behave differently under the print head. A machine not properly profiled for your vinyl range produces ink adhesion issues that show up under lamination or after installation — both expensive problems to fix.

Throughput on Deadlines

Vehicle wrap jobs typically have hard deadlines — a fleet handover or a promotional vehicle launch cannot slip. A printer that requires frequent maintenance interventions or slows on large continuous jobs creates pressure that compounds on every booking.

Panel Width

Full vehicle wraps on vans, commercial vehicles and buses require wide panels to minimise seams. Choosing a printer that is too narrow for your most common jobs forces tiling that adds installation time and creates more visible join lines on the vehicle.

"Vehicle wrap shops consistently underestimate how much the vinyl profile matters. A properly built ICC profile for your specific vinyl and laminate combination is worth more to colour consistency than the printer model you choose."

Questions vehicle wrap shops ask us

Common Questions
Answered

These are the questions our team gets asked most often by vehicle wrap shops and fleet graphics businesses considering a new wide format printer.

HP Latex is the most widely used technology in UK vehicle wrap production. It prints dry and ready to laminate immediately with no outgassing period, requires no ventilation or extraction, and produces outdoor-durable graphics rated for up to three years unlaminated on cast vinyl. The HP Latex 700 and 800 series are the standard choice for most wrap shops. Eco-solvent is a valid alternative at a lower hardware entry cost, but requires an outgassing period before lamination which slows throughput on tight turnarounds. We can run test prints on your vinyl before you decide.
Most vehicle wrap work requires a 54-inch (1372mm) or 64-inch (1626mm) wide format printer. A 54-inch machine covers the majority of car and van panels without tiling. For larger commercial vehicles, HGVs and buses, a 64-inch model gives you significantly more flexibility and reduces seams on large flat panels. Going wider than 64 inches is only cost-effective at very high volume or for specialist fleet graphics work on the largest vehicles.
On HP Latex or eco-solvent ink printed onto cast vinyl with a matching overlaminate, vehicle wrap graphics are typically rated for five to seven years under normal outdoor conditions. Unlaminated HP Latex prints on cast vinyl are rated for up to three years. Longevity depends on the vinyl, the ink, the laminate and the quality of the ICC profile used in production. Generic vinyl without a matched profile will underperform on both colour accuracy and durability — the profiling step is not optional for professional vehicle wrap work.
A wide format printer and a cutting plotter are separate pieces of equipment. Most vehicle wrap shops use a dedicated cutting plotter for contour cutting printed panels and pre-cut elements. Some HP Latex models include a basic integrated cutter for straight cuts and trimming, but precision contour cutting of complex shapes requires a separate machine. We supply and install finishing equipment alongside wide format printers and can advise on the right cutting solution for your workflow and volume.
Yes. We arrange operating leases and finance leases for HP Latex and Epson wide format printers, typically over two to four years. For wrap shops with consistent volume, a managed print agreement covering hardware, ink and servicing on a fixed monthly cost removes the capital outlay and gives you a predictable cost per square metre. This is particularly useful when scaling from one machine to two as the business grows.
