My printer is printing blank pages; how to fix it

If your printer is printing nothing but blank pages, it can be incredibly frustrating.

There are several reasons why your printer might be printing blank pages, many of which are, thankfully, relatively easy to fix.

We’ve created a helpful guide outlining how you can fix this common problem yourself, without breaking your printer.

Why is my printer printing blank pages?

There are a number of reasons why your printer may be printing blank pages, including:

  • The nozzles have become congested
  • Driver and software issues
  • Problems with your cartridge installation
  • The cartridges have become dislodged
  • You’re using the wrong paper size
  • The document you’re printing contains blank pages

If you suspect that any of the above is causing your printer to print blank pages, try following the steps below:

Fix #1 – Restart your printer

The first thing to try is restarting your printer and checking that it is properly connected to your computer or laptop. You will be amazed at how many times a simple reset will resolve any technical issues with your printer. When restarting, make sure your device is shut down completely and that you have disconnected the power cord.

Fix #2 – Check your ink and toner

If you have restarted your printer and are still experiencing issues, you should then check the estimated ink levels and replace any cartridges that are low or empty. At this stage, you should also check for any damage to the ink cartridges as this could also be causing you issues.

Fix #3 – Unclog the print head

Unclogging your printer head can help to resolve any printing issues. You can do this by activating the automatic cleaning cycle, which you will find on your printer’s control panel. This helps to discharge any excess ink out of your printer, whilst softening and removing clogs on the print head.

Fix #4 – Manually unclog the print head

If your printer’s automatic cleaning cycle fails to work, you can also try manually cleaning the print head. You can do this by opening the ink cartridge carriage and uninstalling each cartridge unit from its slot. You will then need to clean and wipe away any congested or dried ink using a clean, lint-free cloth dampened in warm water. Clean the print head and carry out a nozzle check. Once clean, make sure the area is dry before you re-insert the print cartridges.
