Perfect Colours’ Race for Life by Violette Moutia

Almost everyone has, or knows someone who has, been affected by cancer at some point in their lives. On Saturday 8th of July two of my Perfect Colours colleagues and I participated in a Race for Life in Maidstone Mote Park to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Almost everyone has, or knows someone who has, been affected by cancer at some point in their lives. On Saturday 8th of July two of my Perfect Colours colleagues and I participated in a Race for Life in Maidstone Mote Park to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Fundraising and training for an event in aid of such an awful disease can be bittersweet. The facts about cancer and its victims are all around us, yet one can come out the other end inspired by people’s generosity and determination. In raising money for the Race for Life, myself and colleagues Megan Yorke and Christina Voysey exceeded our target, raising £600 towards cancer research by calling in help from friends both inside and outside the office.

Considering we were only roped into the run 9 weeks ago, two of which I spent on holiday, I’m proud of how our Perfect Colours team performed. This was no 5km walk in the park. The route was riddled with obstacles, pools of muddy water and patches of mud that made Glastonbury look like a bowling green! Much of the race was on an incline, which we climbed under a sweltering July sun. Despite the testing conditions, there was a heart-warming atmosphere of mutual encouragement among the many participants. We set off on our muddy march at 9am, and were followed by waves of 200 people hour after that.

Events like these are wonderful displays of solidarity, but it’s important to remember the real results it can achieve. For example, more women than ever are surviving breast cancer thanks to improved awareness, research and treatments. Around five out of six of those diagnosed will survive a further five years, compare to three out of six 40 years ago. This is in no small part due to organisations like Cancer Research UK and the money and awareness they raise with their events.

I’d like to thank everyone that donated to such a good cause, one that’s close to all our hearts. Also, thank you to our Perfect Colours’ client Icon Printing for their generous contribution. It was truly amazing to see how many took part, whether running, organising or just donating a few pounds. To anyone considering running for charity, I strongly recommend going for it. The reaction from donors and fellow participants is inspiring, and the exercise won’t do you any harm either!
